Halide Journal
The Communications Program’s Journalism practicum team has come out with a new publication! Joyce Li, the publications Editor-in-Chief, shared the wonderful concept behind the new name, “Halide is the name of our team’s new publication. The word ‘halide’ comes from silver halide, a salt compound that’s found in a type of photographic paper/film. To make a print with silver halide, the film containing this compound is exposed to light, which causes a chemical reaction that produces a vibrant and colorful image.
The role of salt and light in the process of making these silver halide prints brings to mind how Jesus called his disciples “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world” (Matt. 5:13-14). Naming our publication Halide reflects our desire to be salt and light through journalism. Our goal is to glorify God, engage truthfully with the world, and serve our audience through our work.” The first volume of this publication is a compendium volume that compiles the long form work of students previously featured in Chicago Retold and Diigima, the journalism practicum’s past publications.
On the team, you’ll find several positions that make Halide a functional and professional grade publishing team. They have multiple photographers and writers, one copyeditor, and one designer, and they are always looking for more students who are dedicated to the art of communicating biblical truth and harsh realities of living in a broken world who have denied said truth through the art of journalism.
“The theme of our work was diaspora communities in Chicago.” said Li when prompted about the team’s vision for this first volume, “One of my favorite experiences from being on the team was when writers and photographers paired up and went to different neighborhoods in the city, like Chinatown and Ukrainian Village, to shoot photos for the writers’ articles.” Li said about her own personal development on the team, “I’m…excited to gain more experience in journalistic writing with the team, and to further explore what it means to be involved in journalism as a follower of Jesus.”
The first volume of Halide was released to campus at the beginning of this Fall 2023 Semester, and was a huge hit with students, faculty, staff, and visitors alike. The team is already gearing up for their second edition of Halide to be produced and released at the end of this semester. Keep an eye out to see what this engaged and energetic team will do next.
